DOPA PARK is a set of small browser toys that take things people do around the world because it feels good, and make each one available for about thirty seconds under one thumb. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to install.
What is being built
This is not a collection of write-ups about interesting customs. The customs are translated into things you do. Each toy has a real act from a real place behind it, an account of how that act is enjoyed where it comes from, and a note on how it was rebuilt on a screen. The writing under each toy is those three things and nothing else.
Adding pages that are only read is not the goal, so the toys stop at twelve. The reading stops at five articles. Given the choice between more kinds and a better feel for each one, we chose the feel.
The eight shapes a good feeling takes
The twelve were chosen so that all eight of the following are covered. The list exists to stop everything ending up with the same texture.
- Breaking — popping, smashing, toppling (puchi / barin / ton)
- Revealing — scratching, wiping, uncovering (gari)
- Peeling — lifting, pulling away (peri)
- Collecting — drawing, gathering, completing (paka / koron)
- Lining up — ordering, matching (shu)
- Cutting — one clean pass (supa)
- Hitting the mark — landing it exactly, PERFECT (pari / tokutoku)
- Squishing — pressing, sinking, springing back (munyu)
What we have decided
1. We do not talk about medicine or health. This site is entertainment and makes no claim of any benefit. Nothing is asserted about what goes on inside a person's body or mind. What gets written is the language of sensation — texture, sound, what it looks like — and the mechanics of the material.
2. There is nothing to win. Including the toys that resemble a draw (paka, koron, gari), there is no property, no points, nothing convertible to money, no payment, no probability display and no rarity. Nothing is modelled on a casino or a slot machine.
3. It is safe with no age restriction. No violence, nothing sexual, nothing built to frighten.
4. We do not use other companies' trademarks as the name of a toy. The toys are named after Japanese onomatopoeia. Generic terms are used for the source material — bubble cushioning, push-pop toy — and a trademark is used only where it is necessary for the explanation, with the owner named.
5. Records never leave your device. Play records, cards, day streaks and your Dopa Menu are all kept in this browser only and are not sent to a server. See the privacy policy for the detail.
6. Facts are checked before they are written. Dates, names and definitions are written only where an official site or a public body confirms them, and anything that could not be confirmed is left out. Everything used is listed with a URL and the exact quotation under "Sources" on each page.
What this site is not connected to
This site has no connection whatsoever to other apps or services with a partly similar name. There is no shared ownership, operation or partnership of any kind.
How the site earns
This site may earn from advertising through Google AdSense and from affiliate programs including the Amazon Associates Program. Pages carrying advertising or referral links say so. Advertising is placed away from the area you play in, and never where it could be touched mid-play.
How it is built
Plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with no framework. Sound is synthesised in the browser rather than served as audio files. Every picture is drawn on screen; there is no image library, and no web fonts are loaded. That is all in aid of weight: each toy page has to arrive, ready to touch, inside sixty kilobytes compressed, and that limit is checked mechanically on every build.
